SAMPLE BILL OF SALE

When buying or selling a motor vehicle privately, you should always write a simple bill of sale.

This typically includes vehicles that must be registered with the department of motor vehicles in your State, such as: Cars, Motorcycles, Light Truck, Van, Utility Vehicle, Trailer, Heavy Truck (over 12,000 lbs), Off-Highway Vehicle, Boat, Snowmobile, Recreational Vehicles and Motor Homes (not recommended for stationary, non-registered mobile homes).

This document is NOT to be used to transfer REAL ESTATE.

A simple bill of sale must contain the following information:

Selling price of the vehicle and date of the transaction.
(VIN) Vehicle Identification Number.
Year, Make and Model of the vehicle.
Odometer reading.
Description of the vehicle.
Buyer's name, address and signature.
Seller's name, address and signature.

Consult with a lawyer if the property being negotiated has a lien on it or has been pledged as security for a loan. In these cases, a release from the party to whom the loan is owed must be obtained.
