Nine of the biggest cities in America have populations over 1 million.

The US state with the largest number of cities with more than 100,000 people is California, and Los Angeles was the fastest growing city.

The American population has reached 300 million in October 2006 and is expected to reach 400 million in 40 years.

The US population is increasing at nearly one per cent a year, making the United States the world's fastest growing industrial nation.
